While the name Andy Warhol immediately brings to mind silkscreens and celebrity portraits, his drawn work holds an essential place in his artistic practice. The exhibition "Andy Warhol.

La ligne et l’image" reveals how this medium, far from being accessory, accompanied his entire career. Trained in illustration, the artist never stopped drawing, even after adopting the mechanical processes that marked his work.

Drawing thus appears as a place of constant experimentation, where images are constructed and a singular visual thought unfolds. From an early Self-Portrait dated 1942 to the acrylic drawings for The Last Supper in 1986, Warhol's drawn production is abundant and varied.

Portraits, caricatures, genre scenes, advertising illustrations, self-promotional portfolios: drawing remained his preferred tool until the late 1950s.

It allowed him to gradually emancipate himself from the influences of Klee, Picasso, Cocteau, as well as American artists like Shahn. Through drawing, Andrew Warhola became Andy Warhol.

A true remote guided tour, this conference will give you a first glimpse into the artist's work before you go to see it, just next door, at the Musée du Luxembourg. A workshop "In the style of Andy Warhol" will be offered at the library on Saturday, October 12th at 3 PM.
