The Women and the Spanish Social Revolution of 1936

This exhibition sheds light on the long-overlooked role of women during the Spanish Social Revolution of 1936, a major period in the contemporary history of Spain. Spanish women, or women who came from other countries as volunteers, took part in every area of the struggle and of social transformation. Some took up arms alongside the fighters, while others put their skills and know-how to work in essential fields such as education, health, collective organisation and support for the population. Through their stories, the exhibition pays tribute to their commitment to a fairer and more egalitarian society, and to their decisive contribution to a movement that carried hope and change.
