Overview
A masterpiece of Provençal Romanesque art, Montmajour Abbey hosts “Floraison majeure” throughout the autumn and winter, an exhibition of creations by craftsman Alain Chevalier.
Around a hundred flowers in enamelled lava stone are displayed in the abbey’s outdoor spaces, echoing the capitals of the cloister.
The exhibition highlights the importance of plant life in Romanesque art. Through its perpetual cycle, nature speaks of life, of its vital force and its beauty, in a creation that is both simple and essential. In the Middle Ages, Romanesque art reinterpreted plant motifs inherited from Antiquity, stripping them back and stylising them. These forms, instantly legible, lend themselves naturally to interlacing: by nature, the plant is reborn.
Created in 2025 for the Abbaye de La Sauve-Majeure, Alain Chevalier’s daisies then made a stop at the Abbaye du Thoronet before joining Montmajour Abbey today.
A mineral flowering to discover through the seasons, between Romanesque heritage and contemporary creation.
