George Sand & Marie d'Agoult : spectacle théâtral et musical pour deux comédiennes-musiciennes

Show marking the 150th anniversary of the deaths of George Sand and Marie d’Agoult, who both died in 1876. It is a theatrical and musical adaptation of the epistolary exchanges between George Sand and Marie d’Agoult, scored with works by their respective lovers, Chopin and Liszt.

They met in 1835 in a Parisian salon: one, a successful novelist who wore men’s clothes and had a cigar between her lips; the other, a countess who had turned to writing under the name Daniel Stern, in love with a Hungarian virtuoso.

From George Sand and Marie d’Agoult grew an immediate, exhilarating friendship, which would fuel more than ten years of correspondence.

The Compagnie en Lien brings these letters to the stage, with live music by Chopin and Liszt, the lovers of the two women, performed by two actresses who are also a cellist and a pianist.

They defied the prejudices of their class and wanted to remain mistresses of their own destiny in a society that denied them autonomy.

For more than ten years, Sand and d’Agoult wrote to each other: art, love, creation, motherhood, writing, freedom — all the struggles of a lifetime.

From these letters, the show draws a crossed portrait, intimate and embodied, of two intellectuals who thought through and lived their emancipation before its time.

Their conversation, nearly two centuries old, resonates with striking acuity at a time when the debate over George Sand’s entry into the Panthéon — backed by a support committee chaired by Juliette Binoche — is animating public life. Chopin and Liszt, the secret language.

This theatre is also a concert. The two performers do not merely speak: they play.

The music of Chopin, Sand’s companion, and of Liszt, d’Agoult’s companion, is not an accompaniment — it is the emotional soundtrack of the correspondence, what is said without words and vibrates between the lines.
