Overview
The Musée national des douanes is hosting a temporary exhibition dedicated to the Customs National Coastguard Directorate (DNGCD).
From 2 April to 22 November 2026, the Musée national des douanes is presenting a temporary exhibition dedicated to the Customs National Coastguard Directorate (DNGCD), exploring the essential role of this institution in maritime surveillance and territorial protection. Through historical artefacts, uniforms, ship models, soundscapes and personal accounts, the exhibition traces the evolution of maritime customs missions from the 18th century to the present day. It highlights contemporary challenges related to maritime trade, security, sea rescue and environmental protection. This retrospective aims to showcase maritime customs heritage and shed light on a little-known aspect of the French customs service's duties.
There are certain institutions whose history is deeply intertwined with that of the French coastline. Customs is certainly one of them. For over three centuries, its officers have scanned the horizon, watched over maritime borders and adapted to the new challenges of global maritime trade. The temporary exhibition at the Musée national des douanes invites visitors to explore this human and operational history, defined by innovation, turning points and continuity.
The history of customs at sea dates back to the 1719 decree by which Louis XV authorised the arming of patrol boats by the Ferme générale, the precursor to the customs administration. Over time, the administration—established in 1791—developed its maritime resources to extend its surveillance zone. From the early coastguard divisions to the formation of the Naval Action Brigade in 1964, and the creation of the Customs National Coastguard Directorate in 2019, the exhibition traces the key milestones in the transformation of a coastal service into a modern maritime force.
