Overview
Mika Ninagawa with EiMAlive with Shadows From 16 December 2026 to 21 March 2027 Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 7.30pm - Late opening on Friday until 10pm The Grand Palais presents an exhibition unprecedented in Europe by Mika Ninagawa, a leading figure in Japanese visual arts, together with her collective of associated creators, EiM. Through photographs, videos and installations, her universe unfolds on a grand scale, inviting the eye to cross the thresholds of a deeply sensitive world.
Born in Tokyo in 1972, Mika Ninagawa creates a body of work at the crossroads of contemporary imagination and Japanese aesthetic memory. In her images, nature emerges where one least expects it, captured in the heart of urban turmoil or carefully framed within spaces shaped by human hands. Gardens, bouquets, artificial flowers, dazzling petals, suspended butterflies, goldfish drifting adrift and fragments of cities form a fragile constellation, in which each motif becomes a mirror of a beauty destined to vanish.
From Tokyo to Taipei, from Venice to Rouen, her universe, which blends photography, film, video and installation, has been presented by major international institutions. In France, she has notably expressed herself through Florae for Van Cleef & Arpels (2021), at the Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles (2024) and as part of Normandie Impressionniste (2026). For Mika Ninagawa, the brilliance of beauty is inseparable from its loss, and colour, vibrant, carries within it a gentle, almost whispered melancholy. To photograph is then to hold on to what slips away, offering the eye the illusion of a preserved moment. But her work is not limited to the still image. With her collective of associated creators EiM (Eternity in a Moment), she shapes lush, enveloping and almost unreal environments.
