“The impossible takes shape.”
Louis Mors is fidgeting with impatience as he rehearses his speech. Shortly, the industrialist will welcome a gathering of influential journalists in his music room. The atmosphere is electric, for his announcement is a sensational one: the creation of the Le Cap-Paris trans-Saharan motor race. A bold challenge launched by the Mors and Granville car firms. Louis has orchestrated his reception perfectly, with several delightful surprises in store. Victor Lazare, a charismatic international star, will perform an exceptional number. The dashing Firmin Popinot, an outstanding driver and five-time world speed record holder, will share his first impressions before crossing the desert at the wheel of the Mors. To finish, the magnificent opera singer Aliénor de Rastignac will lend her voice to an experience never before seen anywhere in the world, thanks to the Phonomors, an invention by Eugénie Toscano.
But a shadow looms. Persistent whispers speak of a certain Octopus, an elusive presence of whom it is unclear whether it is a malicious rumour, a hoax… or a deadly threat. Octopus slips through the heart of this distinguished assembly, spreading a strange tension through the atmosphere. The veneer of this prestigious evening may well crack, foreshadowing a dramatic incident.
