Overview
As he puts it himself: “I have a face that doesn’t leave room for long silences”...With his long beard and imposing presence, Umut Köker stands out on the stand-up scene. But don’t be taken in by his “tête de Turc” (the French idiom for “whipping boy”), because the thirtysomething isn’t one to shy away from a paradox. With his sharp pen and a gaze as gentle, sensitive and tender as it is lucid about the world, he delivers a show that is both hilarious and poignant.
A clever mix of personal confidences about his Turkish and Kurdish origins, his childhood in a suburban tower block and his move to an office block in La Défense, his singledom or the pervasive racism around him, “Paradoxe”, his first show, champions the need to look beyond appearances. Disarming subtlety, undeniable comic flair: Umut Köker is an unmissable revelation.
