Overview
FABRICE LUCHINI - L'art du portrait selon Cioran
When I discovered this Anthologie du portrait. De Saint-Simon à Tocqueville, compiled by Emil Cioran, I naturally came to those French geniuses, the great memoirists, with their astonishing women such as Madame du Deffand and Madame de Genlis, but also Alexis de Tocqueville, and so on. I wanted to share these portraits from the 18th and 19th centuries on stage. This reading is nourished, enlightened and enriched by that marvellous book which was my bedside companion, titled Les Cahiers de Cioran; it reveals a writer totally different from the image of the despairing man or the specialist in suicide, bringing to light instead a man who is funny, utterly unhappy yet alive.
