Overview
Chaâbi sprang up in the early 20th century in the lower casbah of Algiers. Inspired by Andalusian music, it departs from it, however, by standing out for its particular phrasing and tone. The lyrics evoke situations close to real life and the concerns of the common people.
The genre was launched by Hadj El-Anka. It is to his memory, and that of other masters, that two major figures of Algerian popular song refer. One of them, Chaou, born in Algiers in 1941, is an elegant artist with a velvet voice.
Sad or cheerful songs, festive atmosphere, borrowings from the Iberian tradition: Chaou, with an art that he alone holds the secret of, speaks directly to the heart.
