Chaâbi burst forth at the beginning of the 20th century in the lower Casbah of Algiers. Inspired by Andalusian music, it nevertheless sets itself apart by distinguishing itself through particular phrasing and tone.
The texts evoke situations close to reality and the concerns of the people. The genre was launched by Hadj El-Anka. It is to his memory and that of other masters that two major figures of Algerian popular song refer.
One of them, Chaou, born in Algiers in 1941, is an elegant artist, with a velvety voice. Sad or happy songs, festive atmosphere, borrowings from Iberian tradition, Chaou, with an art, of which only he knows the secret, speaks directly to our hearts.
