Composées simultanément, les cinquième et sixième symphonies sont provocantes tant elles détonnent dans la décennie 1800. La cinquième est le combat angoissé, épique et triomphal d’un homme contre son destin, qui frappe à sa porte dès les premières notes.
Et la Pastorale est sa moralité. Révolution copernicienne dans la représentation artistique de la nature, elle est un manifeste: la nature romantique est un sanctuaire, seul lieu où l’artiste peut véritablement créer et s’abandonner.
