Bordeaux live opéra

As part of the partnership between the town of Cenon and the Bordeaux opera, we invite you to discover 'Carmen'.

Opera | New production

When Carmen premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1875, it launched a long run of successes that continues to this day. A symbol of assertive female desire, Carmen speaks, through its famous arias, of freedom, violence and power. In the new production by Emmanuelle Bastet, created with the Shanghai Opera, the director whose La Bohème was seen on the stage of the Grand-Théâtre in 2024, returns to the source of the story and gives fresh psychological depth to the character of Don José. In Seville, within a society where the Romani people and Spanish society coexist more or less comfortably, Carmen is, in Emmanuelle Bastet's words, 'a matter of sensation'. The scorching sun, the dust, skin, breath, the smell of tobacco, the brush of fabrics and the jingle of jewellery: everything here is a pretext for drama, the dizziness of desire and the sting of jealousy. A popular opera of absolute modernity, in which passion does not sublimate but devastates.
