Overview
When it comes to the relationship between France and Algeria, there is still much to tell... How could colonists have thought, and even claimed: 'This is our land'?
Adapting a novel by Mathieu Belezi, Célie Pauthe stages a multi-generational family saga to examine the past and look History in the eye.
Beyond the silences and the wounds that never fully healed, caused by one hundred and thirty-two years of French colonisation, C'était notre terre traces the fate of a family of wealthy colonists and their Kabyle nanny, caught up in the turmoil of the Algerian War of Independence.
Célie Pauthe takes hold of Mathieu Belezi's baroque writing, where the tragic constantly brushes against the grotesque and the lyrical against the absurd, giving voice to the different, conflicting points of view. '
