Dafné Kritharas

Steeped in the melodies of the islands, Dafné Kritharas sings of the Mediterranean, exile and travel. She draws on her own experience to give voice to the universal song of fishermen's wives and seafarers. It is impossible to resist a voice so pure, by turns intimate and heart-wrenching, of exceptional power. Immersed in Franco-Greek culture since childhood, Dafné Kritharas grew up in the shadow of the myths and legends of the Mediterranean basin, which she brings vividly back to life in spellbinding concerts. From these intimate dramas she weaves allegories, but she also revives the festive spirit breathed by folk songs and village celebrations. On the horizon throughout is the sea, a symbol of both parting and reunion, where the roots of a multiple heritage meet (Iranian, Armenian, Kurdish, Greek, Albanian…). From rebetiko to the Sephardic songs of Asia Minor, she celebrates what unites us rather than what divides us, beyond communitarianism. Nourished by jazz and folk, her strong, clear voice trembles in the high notes and resonates in the low ones. Drawing on the timeless heritage of humanity, the traditional instrumentation is sometimes spiced with a touch of electronica. Dafné Kritharas is a little bit witch, a little bit magician, a little bit goddess… Greek, of course!
