Overview
The Musée Delacroix presents a new hanging that explores the animal world of Eugène Delacroix, on the occasion of the acquisition of two studies of horses, recently restored. Shown for the first time at the museum, the two studies of stallions, a chestnut and a golden chestnut, bear witness to Delacroix's keen interest in the horse and its representation.
For the Romantic painter, horses, lions and tigers were both a subject of study and a theme he staged in many paintings, lithographs, decorative schemes and more throughout his career.
The horses he saw during his 1832 journey to Morocco fed his imagination of the horseman, whether a soldier or a rider taking part in a fantasia.
The paintings Delacroix regarded as studies were not meant to be exhibited or sold, but to serve him as references and sources of inspiration. This temporary display gives particular weight to the painter's creative process. Press preview ▸ Friday 11 September 2026 at 11am.
