Fabrice Luchini LIT VICTOR HUGO

In this production directed by Emmanuelle Garassino, Fabrice Luchini reads texts and poems by Victor Hugo, bringing out the words, the breath and the rhythm of the great poet.

« I gave a first reading of texts and poems by Victor Hugo in front of an audience in June 2021, in the gardens of the Maison de Chateaubriand. Contrary to André Gide's remark, though he was a shrewd critic, « Who is the greatest French poet? Victor Hugo, alas  », I find that there are dazzling moments in Victor Hugo's writing that go beyond the gifted craftsman, and joys of expression that spring from his very prolific output. »

Fabrice Luchini presents to the audience a pure reading of texts, including the sublime « Booz endormi  », which Marcel Proust defined as the finest poem of the 19th century, as well as powerful poems and commentaries on Victor Hugo by writers such as Charles Baudelaire and Charles Péguy.

The reading begins with Hugo's exile in Jersey and Guernsey, and touches in particular on the death of his daughter Léopoldine.
