In this production directed by Emmanuelle Garassino, Fabrice Luchini reads texts and poems by Victor Hugo, sublimating the words, breath, and rhythm of the great poet. “I gave a first reading of Victor Hugo's texts and poems to the public in June 2021, in the gardens of the Maison de Chateaubriand. Contrary to André Gide's phrase, despite being a keen analyst, 'Who is the greatest French poet? Victor Hugo, alas,' for me there are dazzling moments in Victor Hugo's writings that go beyond the gifted craftsman, and joys of writing that emerge from his very fertile creation.” Fabrice Luchini presents here to the public a pure reading of texts, such as the sublime “Booz endormi,” which Marcel Proust defined as the most beautiful of the 19th century, but also powerful poems or comments by writers like Charles Baudelaire and Charles Péguy on Victor Hugo. The reading begins at the time of his exile in Jersey and Guernsey, and notably evokes the death of his daughter Léopoldine.
