Overview
Voices long stifled rise back to the surface like embers beneath the ashes. With Femmes des Caraïbes, Michael Mac Batz opens a vast theatre cycle devoted to female figures who lived through the history of the Caribbean, resisting oppression, slavery and erasure.
This first instalment spotlights two heroines: Queen Nanny, the legendary Jamaican Maroon leader, and Solitude, a Guadeloupean fighter who fought alongside Louis Delgrès against Napoleon's reinstatement of slavery.
Blending historical narrative and poetic breath, the show brings to life burning memories of freedom. On stage, a single actress can become an entire people, conjure up a mountain refuge, a plantation, a battle or a prison.
The one-woman format is then transformed into a fresco inhabited by songs, ghosts and uprisings. From Jamaica to the French Antilles, Femmes des Caraïbes unfolds a vibrant, embodied theatre, carried by the voices of those whom History has too often left at the edge of the page.
Written by Ava-Gail Gardiner (Queen Nanny) and Laurence Joseph (Solitude, based on André Schwarz-Bart). Directed by Michael Mac Batz. With Laurence Joseph and Rémi Oriogun-Williams
