Jake Xerxes Fussel

Jake Xerxes Fussell, a singular figure on the contemporary American folk scene, stops over at Le Hasard Ludique for an evening dedicated to the rich musical traditions of the American South.

Jake Xerxes Fussell has built a reputation as a guitarist, singer, and interpreter of traditional American songs, which he reinvents with a unique sensibility. Hailing from North Carolina, he draws inspiration from the vast repertoire of ballads, blues, work songs, and dance tunes from the American South. His approach is not that of a mere archivist, but of an artist who breathes new life into these ancestral melodies and narratives, making them relevant for a contemporary audience. His work is often compared to that of ethnomusicologists or folk collectors, but with the personal touch of an accomplished musician, capable of transforming heritage into a living work.

Throughout his discography, Jake Xerxes Fussell has developed a recognisable style, characterised by subtle fingerpicking guitar work and a soft, steady voice. Albums such as « What in the Actual Fuck  » (2015), « Out of Sight  » (2019), and « Good and Green Again  » (2022) illustrate his ability to choose often obscure pieces and arrange them with their own elegance and depth. He does not seek to modernise these songs, but rather to reveal their intrinsic beauty and timeless resonance, presenting them in stripped-down versions that highlight the strength of the melodies and the poetry of the lyrics. His interpretations are imbued with a gentle melancholy and a quiet wisdom, inviting attentive listening.

On stage, Jake Xerxes Fussell offers an intimate and captivating experience. Far from artifice, he favours an authentic performance where his guitar and voice are the sole vectors of his art. The audience can expect to be transported on a sonic journey through time and space, exploring the deep roots of American music. His concerts are moments of sharing, where history and music meet, allowing for the discovery or rediscovery of treasures from the folk heritage.
