This show retraces the extraordinary life of Chavela Vargas through her melodramatic songs.
It evokes her beginnings, singing in the streets of Mexico City, where she arrived at the age of 17, her "loving" friendship with Frida Kahlo a few years later, and then her heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, a period during which she toured the world.
By performing the ranchera repertoire, she caused a scandal in a still very conservative Mexico. In the 1990s, Pedro Almodóvar, her friend and great admirer, featured her singing in his films.
Chavela Vargas then achieved worldwide success, performing on the legendary stages of the Olympia and Carnegie Hall. Between passion, rebellion and poetry, this show pays tribute to a woman who lived, loved and sang without ever betraying herself.
