The Ensemble intercontemporain opens this jubilee season with fanfare. Fifty years ago, it gave its first concerts under Pierre Boulez's direction. The festivities begin with a celebration of its founder and audience.
Associated with British DJ Mariam Rezaei, soloists from the Ensemble intercontemporain offer their audience an unprecedented experience: they are invited to create the concert program themselves by voting for their preferred works.
For one evening, the ensemble transforms into a contemporary juke-box, running through the best-of of its repertoire. The party wouldn't be complete without a premiere. And what a premiere! Pierre Boulez's Dérive 3 for brass and percussion.
Like its two predecessors, Dérive 3 is both a reflection, a development, even a proliferation of often very limited material: in this case several arpeggios extracted from the cantata Le Visage nuptial, composed in 1946–47.
