Overview
A man, in the middle of his life, reflects on his greatest sorrow: the disappearance of his friend. The latter is not dead; he simply left without giving a reason. He has become the absent one who haunts him.
Through his memories, the narrator questions the nature of male friendship.
He searches in their shared moments for the beginnings of 'frérocité' — that way men have of measuring themselves against each other, of wanting to dominate the other, and sometimes of destroying each other.
