Overview
On the occasion of the Bicentenary of the birth of photography, LE BAL is dedicating an exhibition for the first time to a collection: that of the Wilson Centre for Photography, assembled by Michael and Jane Wilson. Through this rare collection of 120 prints, mostly vintage, the exhibition explores the sometimes troubled, sometimes luminous, always unstable link that unites the photographer with the photographed.
Fleeting encounter, premeditated encounter: from on-the-spot capture to collaborative staging, the exhibition questions the relationship that develops, at the moment of the shot, between the photographer and their subject.
What does the image reveal about the respective positions of these two bodies? About their complicity, their face-to-face, the silent pact sealed by one's gaze on the other's appearance?
The exhibition highlights iconic and lesser-known works, from the 1920s to the present day, in a sensitive journey that favours rebounds, affinities and contaminations between images.
