Les Wampas

Formed in 1983, Les Wampas, who take their name from a tribe mentioned in a Rahan episode, revolve around the eccentric and charismatic personality of Didier Chappedelaine, the group's singer, quickly nicknamed Didier Wampas.

This surname substitute will also be adopted on stage by other members of the band, such as Niko Wampas (drums), and, more occasionally, Philippe Martinot – alias Philippe Wampas – one of the first guitarists of the band.

Drawing inspiration from the punk wave, but also from rockabilly and "yé-yé" rock, the band released their first 45 single, "Dracu bop", in 1985, then their first album "Tutti Frutti" in 1986.

Recognized by the general public in 2004 for their participation in the Victoires de la Musique final, Les Wampas experienced a second surge in publicity in 2005 thanks to their single "Chirac en prison", banned from broadcasting.

The band, which had already made itself known two years earlier with the virulent "Manu Chao", has no equal for combining punk rock with absurd lyrics, which it does with determination in "Rock'n'Roll Part 9" (2006) and "Les Wampas Are the Proof That God Exists" (2009).

In 2014, after two solo ventures, Didier Wampas and his band return to celebrate thirty years of career as they should in "Les Wampas Are Upset".

Respecting no convention, the band does not take advantage of this round number to release its first compilation and waits another two years to release "Never Trust a Best-Of".

On their latest album "Tempête, Tempête", 3 years after the excellent "Save The World", the band knew how to surround themselves well: Lionel Limiñana (The Limiñanas) on production, and Nicolas Quéré (The Arctic Monkeys, Delgres) for recording and mixing.
