Presented by the Centre Culturel d'Ecully. Blending jazz, folk songs, and improvisation, NUBU (acronym for Nahash Urban Brass Unit) invents its own folklore, a music that is both timeless and contemporary.
The group playfully brings together instruments from different eras: the serpent, a European ancestor of the tuba; the flugabone, more recently designed for its practicality in marching bands; the trombone; animal skin percussion; and the double bass.
The voices form a distinct, elastic, and vibrant texture, nourished by scansion, yodelling, and shouts. By gleefully playing with different eras, NUBU offers the serpent — with its suggested mystical charge and forgotten timbre — an unexpected place in a dazzling present.
