Overview
Push open the door and journey from the 1980s to the present day to discover the history of street art from Paris to New York. At La Villette, graffiti, murals, tags and sculptures spread across 3,600 square metres and tell how a criminalised act became an influential artistic language.
What is it about? Rooted in the lasting cultural impact of graffiti and street art, "Beyond the Streets" is not just a simple exhibition, but a genuine living platform.
The retrospective traces how this underground movement has redefined cities, language, fashion, music and activism on a global scale.
From tagged subway cars to museum walls and international stages, the exhibition examines how these artists, who once worked without permission, have transformed visual culture on an unprecedented scale.
The editorial team's view Who would have thought that Paris would one day exhibit entire walls of vintage aerosol spray paint cans or parade tagged miniature subway cars? That is the focus of this tremendous exhibition to see before the end of August at La Villette (19th).
"Beyond the Streets" is not limited to artworks. It also tells the story of those who built this culture: graffiti pioneers, explorers of subway tunnels, somewhat ethnological photographers, astute collectors.
Everyone takes part in honoring the past, in bringing back to life an art form that is ephemeral by nature, a large part of whose traces disappeared from walls long ago. What saved them? Their creative strength.
Every tag, every graffiti, every mosaic, every sculpture, every photograph tells how street art, a vernacular form of contemporary art, has managed to express a certain reality: occupying public space by showing its transformation.
Obsolete televisions, plastic toys, concert posters or subway cars, everything is a creative laboratory, everything is conducive to making the ordinary extraordinary.
Around one hundred artists are taking part in this project with major archives, as if to remind us that street art's other strength lies in the almost total commitment it requires.
Like Obey and his posters subverting the codes of propaganda, or Bando who succeeded in making graf emerge
