Overview
For more than ten years, the four members of Songhoy Blues have paid homage to the ancestors who transmitted works to guide future generations.
The band's name comes from their ethnic group settled along the Niger River bend, in northern Mali, as well as the musical genre they play, Tuareg/desert blues.
Based in Bamako for a decade (group members cannot return to their region of origin where they are threatened by religious fundamentalism) Songhoy Blues plays songs that evoke daily life and human relationships in Mali.
Their new album "Heritage" explores a more acoustic and renewed approach to desert blues. Recorded in Bamako with producer Paul Chandler, this new album blends compositions and Malian musical influences, drawing on traditional instruments and local collaborations.
