The Tubs, groupe gallois basé à Londres, brasse post-punk, folk britannique et guitares jangle, quelque part entre Flying Nun et pub rock sous tension.
Avec “Cotton Crown”, ils assombrissent le propos sans lâcher les hooks : un disque plus personnel, plus risqué, où tout s’entrechoque — l’urgence d’Hüsker Dü, la mélancolie pop et une écriture à vif. Owen “O” Williams, souvent rapproché de Richard Thompson, y creuse ses obsessions (amour, malaise, honte sociale) jusqu’à un final hanté par la mort de sa mère, la chanteuse Charlotte Greig.
La force du disque tient dans ce contraste : des textes sombres portés par une euphorie pop immédiate. Les guitares naviguent entre Johnny Marr, Pentangle et une brillance contemporaine à la The 1975, pendant que la section rythmique cogne comme Guided by Voices un soir de grande ivresse.
