About — The artist
Ahmed Zergui (Arabic: أحمد زرقي), born in 1948 in Sidi Bel Abbès, Algeria, and who died on November 27, 1983 in Tenira, Algeria, was an Algerian raï singer-songwriter.
He was a pioneer in introducing the wah-wah pedal into raï. In the 1970s, he founded the group Les Frères Zergui, made up of Kacem Atek (rhythm guitar), Benyamna (organ), El Ârbi (drums), and Bengamra (accordion). It is thought that “Les Frères Zergui” were not actually brothers, but rather a group of friends. In fact, the Zergui brothers' nickname (زرقي, indigo, blue) was chosen at the time by their publisher, notably because of their tanned complexion.
Zergui died on November 27, 1983, in a road accident while driving his car.
