About — The artist

Benoit Dunoyer de Segonzac, born in 1962, is a virtuoso double bassist who has performed with Jacques Loussier and André Arpino in interpretations of works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Erik Satie.

A cousin of the painter André Dunoyer de Segonzac, he was born in Strasbourg, where he began studying music at age five at the Strasbourg Conservatory. He completed his professional training on double bass at age twenty with Vincent Pasquier, of the Orchestre de Paris, and Jean Marc Rollez, a soloist at the Paris Opera.

Dunoyer de Segonzac and drummer André Arpino have tackled some of today's most popular great baroque classics. Their aim is to play each piece with an updated sound while staying true to the spirit of each one.

The repetitive structure of the Pachelbel allows Loussier and his virtuoso double bassist, de Segonzac, to trade melody and bass lines in a delightful interplay of sounds and ideas. In the Albinoni, built in a similarly repetitive harmonic framework, Arpino brings a driving rhythm in the middle section that pushes Loussier toward playful improvisation.
