About — The artist

Caravan is a British rock band from the Canterbury region of England. It was formed in 1968 by former members of The Wilde Flowers, keyboardist David Sinclair and his cousin, bassist Richard Sinclair, along with guitarist Pye Hastings and drummer Richard Coughlan. The band never achieved the widespread commercial success that was largely predicted for them early in their career, but is nevertheless considered a key element of the Canterbury scene, blending psychedelic rock, jazz, and classical influences to create a distinctive progressive rock sound.

The band was initially based in Whitstable, Kent, near Canterbury, but later relocated to London when they briefly signed with Verve Records, releasing their eponymous debut album. After being dropped by Verve, the band signed with Decca Records, where they released their most critically acclaimed album, In the Land of Grey and Pink, in 1971. Dave Sinclair left after the album's release, and the band was close to disbanding the following year. However, Hastings and Coughlan decided to continue the experience and added new members, notably violinist Geoffrey Richardson, before gradually becoming dormant from 1978 onwards.

The band reformed several times over the following decades, and Caravan remains active as a band in the 21st century, despite the death of Richard Coughlan in December 2013.
