Frank Zappa

Frank Vincent Zappa, born on December 21, 1940, in Baltimore (Maryland) and died on December 4, 1993, in Los Angeles (California), was an American composer, musician, guitarist, filmmaker, producer, and satirist.

His works span several distinct musical genres: rock, jazz, and contemporary music, with a connection to musique concrète. Frank Zappa also occasionally directed films and music videos, and designed album covers for albums he entirely produced. During his lifetime, he released over sixty albums that he recorded, first with The Mothers of Invention and then, for a significant part, under his own name. From his youth, he was interested in 20th-century classical composers, notably Edgard Varèse, Igor Stravinsky, Anton Webern, and 1950s rhythm and blues. He wrote his first classical music compositions in high school while playing drums in rhythm and blues bands. He eventually gravitated towards the guitar, which remained his instrument of choice for most of his career.

A self-taught singer-songwriter, Frank Zappa was open to multiple musical influences: his music, made of experiments in various musical styles, proves difficult to classify into a distinct genre. Ruth Underwood, for example, explained: “He embodied everything at once. You couldn't say 'Oh, it's rock'n'roll' because it wasn't, nor was it jazz, nor pop or contemporary music, so what was it? It was Zappa!”

The tracks on his first album with The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, released in 1966, appear to be conventional rock, while distinguishing themselves through collective improvisations and sound collages created in the studio. Subsequent albums affirmed his eclectic and experimental approach to music, trying out several genres and straying from the conventional paths of rock, jazz, or classical music. His work is characterized by a global coherence that he defined as Conceptual continuity or Project/Object, seeing many musical themes, ideas, characters, and figures of speech reappear in various forms across almost all of his albums. Zappa's lyrics, often tinged with biting, sometimes crude and absurd humor, reveal his iconoclastic vision of established social practices, structures, and hierarchies. As a keen observer of his contemporaries' customs, and in a satirical tone, Zappa fiercely criticized the educational system and religious institutions and established himself as a diligent and passionate defender of freedom of expression, self-education, political engagement, and the abolition of censorship.

Zappa's works, from a prolific artist, are often very favorably received by critics. He also achieved commercial success, particularly in Europe, although he worked as an independent artist for much of his career. Zappa is frequently cited as a major source of influence by several contemporary musicians and composers. His imposing body of work and almost all of his recorded concerts being preserved at his home in a space called The Vault, his family continued to release albums after his death, with the total number of publications exceeding 130 albums in the 21st century.
