About — The artist
Charles Dollé (active roughly between 1735 and 1755) was a French viol player and composer. Very little is known about his life. He was active in Paris and was a sought-after viol teacher. His music, which always features the viol, was influenced by Marin Marais (whose death he commemorates in a tombeau) and by the Italian style, particularly present in his later works, which nonetheless retain typically French ornamentation.
Dollé's music has come down to us through five printed collections, all published in Paris: the Sonates en trio pour les violons, flûtes-traversières et violes avec la basse continue, op. 1 (1737); the Pièces de viole, op. 2 (1737); the Pièces pour le pardessus de viole, op. 3 (1737); the Sonates, duos & pièces, op. 4 (1737); and the Sonates à deux pardessus de viole sans basse, op. 6 (1754). Another collection, the Livre troisième, pour le pardessus de viole (op. 5, circa 1749–1750), is lost.
