Daniel Balavoine

Daniel Balavoine (French pronunciation: [danjɛl balavwan]), born 5 February 1952 in Alençon (Orne) and died 14 January 1986 near Gourma-Rharous (Mali), was a French singer-songwriter and musician.

Beginning in the late 1960s as a ballroom singer in Pau, he performed covers of Bob Dylan before joining several rock bands where he signed his first compositions. He launched his solo career in 1973, heavily inspired by British progressive rock (Genesis, Supertramp, and Queen).

With his high tenor voice and vocal techniques, straddling opera and hard rock, Balavoine became known in 1978 with his third album Le Chanteur (The Singer) and his role as Johnny Rockfort in the rock opera Starmania by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon. Over eight years, he accumulated successes while evolving his music during the 1980s toward an increasingly experimental and innovative pop-rock sound through his extensive use of synthesizers and digital music production. At his death, the singer, eager to pursue an international career, was about to move to London to found an English-language band. Over ten years of career and eight albums, Daniel Balavoine wrote and composed over one hundred songs and remains one of the most popular French-language artists, thanks to numerous hits such as Mon fils ma bataille (1980), La vie ne m'apprend rien (1980), Tous les cris les SOS (1985), and L'Aziza (1985).

He was also famous for his socially conscious lyrics and public positions. A recurring media guest for his polemicist persona, Daniel Balavoine did not hesitate to challenge the political world in memorable interventions. Active within numerous organizations such as Amnesty International, SOS Racisme, and Restos du Cœur (named patron by Coluche), the singer was also recognized for his commitment to humanitarian actions. His passion for motorsports led him to participate twice in the Dakar Rally, in 1983 and 1985, from which he returned deeply moved by the poverty. In 1986, following major Ethiopian famines, he developed with other artists an operation named Action Écoles, primarily aimed at combating hunger in Africa. Balavoine, using the Dakar logistics, personally transported water pumps for rice cultivation in Niger and Mali. It was during this humanitarian operation that he died in a helicopter accident, accompanied by the rally director Thierry Sabine.
