About — The artist

Édith Piaf, stage name of Édith Gassion, born on 19 December 1915 in Paris and died on 10 October 1963 in Grasse (Alpes-Maritimes), was a French singer, lyricist, composer, and actress. Nicknamed “La Môme Piaf” at the beginning of her career, she was behind several successes that became classics of the repertoire, such as La Vie en rose, Non, je ne regrette rien, Hymne à l'amour, Mon légionnaire, La Foule, Milord, Mon Dieu, and L'Accordéoniste.

A singer with an extraordinary voice and striking interpretation, she inspired many composers and mentored young artists such as Yves Montand, Charles Aznavour, Les Compagnons de la chanson, Georges Moustaki, and Charles Dumont. Édith Piaf was 1.47 m tall, her small stature having contributed to shaping her stage image and the public perception of the singer. She achieved international fame, but the end of her career was made difficult by serious health problems; she died at the age of 47.
