Édith Piaf

Édith Piaf, stage name of Édith Gassion, born on 19 December 1915 in Paris and died on 10 October 1963 in Grasse (Alpes-Maritimes), is a French singer, lyricist, composer and actress. Nicknamed "La Môme Piaf" early in her career, she is behind several hits that have become classics of the French repertoire, such as La Vie en rose, Non, je ne regrette rien, Hymne à l'amour, Mon légionnaire, La Foule, Milord, Mon Dieu and L'Accordéoniste.

A singer with an extraordinary voice and gripping delivery, she inspired numerous composers and mentored young artists such as Yves Montand, Charles Aznavour, Les Compagnons de la Chanson, Georges Moustaki and Charles Dumont. Édith Piaf stood 1.47 m tall, her small stature having helped shape her stage image and the public's perception of her. She achieved international fame, but the end of her career was made difficult by serious health problems; she died at the age of 47.
