About — The artist
A virtuoso bassist born in Douala and trained in Paris, Étienne Mbappé is one of the great names of modern bass — instantly recognisable by his black silk gloves, which have become his trademark. A sought-after sideman (John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension, Joe Zawinul, Salif Keïta, Manu Dibango), he also leads his own projects spanning jazz fusion, Cameroonian groove and chanson, with a melodic lyricism rare among bass players. Catching him at a club in Paris means getting up close to a world-class musician.
