About — The artist

Fela Kuti, also known as Fela Anikulapo Kuti, or simply Fela, was a Nigerian singer, saxophonist, bandleader, cryptarch, and politician, born on 15 October 1938 in Abeokuta and who died on 2 August 1997 in Lagos.

Founder of the Kalakuta Republic organisation in Nigeria, he is considered the inventor of Afrobeat, a fusion of African-American music (jazz, funk), West African music (mainly Ghanaian highlife), and traditional music from his home country Nigeria (primarily rhythms from his Yoruba ethnic group).
