About — The artist

Hildegard of Bingen (or in German: Hildegard von Bingen), born in 1098 at Bermersheim vor der Höhe near Alzey (Rhenish Hesse) and died on 17 September 1179 at Rupertsberg (near Bingen), was a German Benedictine nun, sometimes called Hildegard of Rupertsberg.

She developed many talents, being at once abbess, mystic, visionary, illuminator, composer, poet, founder and Franconian preacher. She is also a leading figure of the flourishing of monastic medicine at the end of the early Middle Ages, a period of transition towards the High Middle Ages in which her life unfolded.

Declared blessed by the Catholic Church from the 12th century, she was canonised and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
