About — The artist

John Coltrane, born on 23 September 1926 in Hamlet (North Carolina) and died on 17 July 1967 in Huntington (New York State), was an American jazz saxophonist and composer.

After Charlie Parker in the 1940s and 1950s, he is considered the most revolutionary and influential saxophonist in jazz history, a leader of the avant-garde movement in the 1960s, and one of the most important jazz artists in music of the second half of the 20th century.

Coltrane always sought to surpass himself on all levels: technically, by exploring new modes of expression, seeking new sounds, new timbres and new ways to extend the range and dynamics of the saxophone; stylistically, managing to broaden the horizons of the instrument's thematic and harmonic development by combining improvisation with warmth of timbre, dynamics and rhythm; personally, by conceiving his music as a spirituality.
