About — The artist

The First Nations, together with the Inuit and the Métis, make up the Indigenous peoples of Canada. Members of First Nations may be registered under the Indian Act and obtain Indian status, or remain non-status. The term became widespread in the 1970s to replace the word « Indian », considered offensive and historically untenable by Indigenous people past and present.

Many communities have adopted the term « First Nation » to replace the term « Indian band »; where applicable, the term is instead used to refer specifically to the Indigenous group in question.

Of the more than one million people who identify as Indigenous in Canada, 64% belong to First Nations. They are divided into 50 nations or linguistic groups and 630 communities. The majority (54%) of First Nations members now live in urban areas rather than on reserves.
