Across nearly 1,800 kilometres of coastline and through some forty languages, the First Nations of the American Northwest have made their art a sacred language, populated by spirits and totemic figures. The First Nations of the American Northwest developed complex sedentary societies, without agriculture or writing, based on the abundance of natural resources: salmon, candlefish, marine mammals, and vast cedar forests. This wealth gave rise to an elaborate way of life and original thought. Their art, deeply linked to their worldview, features prodigious beings and spirit animals such as Raven, creator and ancestor of the clans. These figures, guardians of ancestral stories and rights, adorn heraldic poles (totems), houses, masks, clothing, and everyday objects. Their production follows precise symbolic and stylistic rules, making this art a sacred language
