About — The venue

The Abbaye de La Sauve-Majeure is a former Benedictine monastery (of the Order of Saint Benedict) located in the commune of La Sauve, in the département of Gironde in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Founded in 1079 by the Duke of Aquitaine and Gérard de Corbie, it housed some 300 monks at its peak. Left in ruins and abandoned at the end of the 18th century, it was listed as a historic monument under the 1840 list. This initial protection was confirmed by a decree published in the Journal officiel in 1914, then by the protection of several plots of land containing the ruins. This whole has been listed as a historic monument since 12 April 1929. Finally, plots omitted from previous decrees were listed as historic monuments by decree of 9 April 2002. The abbey was also inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1998, as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
