Manufacture des Gobelins

La manufacture des Gobelins is a tapestry factory with its entrance located at 42, avenue des Gobelins in Paris, in the 13th arrondissement. It was established in April 1601 under the impetus of Henry IV, at the instigation of his trade advisor Barthélemy de Laffemas.

Its gallery, renovated starting in the late 1970s to restore its original mission as an exhibition space, celebrated its 400th anniversary when it reopened to the public on 12 May 2007.

Its official name is "Manufacture nationale des Gobelins". Since 2025, it has been included in the public institution Manufactures nationales - Sèvres & Mobilier national, notably alongside the Mobilier national and other textile manufactories: the manufacture de Beauvais (workshops located in Paris and Beauvais) and the manufacture de la Savonnerie (workshops located in Paris and Lodève).

The manufactures des Gobelins, de Beauvais, and de la Savonnerie are three major centres for tapestry and carpets in France, to which are attached the Lodève workshop (carpets) as well as the workshops in Le Puy (bobbin lace) and Alençon (needle lace). Their priorities are furnishing state buildings and continuing a tradition by preserving ancient techniques and maintaining traditional quality applied to contemporary artistic expressions.

The manufacture nationale des Gobelins, along with its corresponding grounds, has been classified as a historic monument by the decree of 24 March 1993.
