With this show, Bérangère Jannelle revisits the first months of the French Revolution at everyone's level (teenagers and adults), without ever oversimplifying the stakes.

A present-tense story of the French Revolution

Here, History literally sits down to eat. Bread, brioches, flour and coffee: starting from the ingredients of breakfast and from a leading food of the Revolution, two actors from the French countryside orchestrate a joyful, playful and embodied theatre of objects, where famous figures cross paths with ordinary people, where great principles rub up against the concrete, and where the debates of 1789 echo those of today. Who represents the people? How do we decide together? What does the common good mean? What can an assembly do? The audience is also invited to take part in these debates, which in part remain our own.

Designed for young people as much as for adults, the show does not only convey a historical narrative: it revives a democratic energy. By giving flesh again to the trial and error, the fervour and the inventiveness of this period, Brioches et révolution! reminds us that democracy is not only an institutional inheritance but a living, collective practice, always to be started again. With humour, intelligence and a sense of play, Bérangère Jannelle delivers a production that is both scholarly and accessible, where the pleasure of theatre becomes also the pleasure of understanding, debating and imagining together.
