Overview

With this show, Bérangère Jannelle revisits the first months of the French Revolution for everyone (teens and adults), without ever simplifying the issues.

A contemporary history of the French Revolution. Here, History literally comes to the table. Bread, brioches, flour, and coffee: using breakfast ingredients and a key food of the revolution, two actors from the French countryside orchestrate a joyful, playful, and embodied object theatre, where famous figures meet anonymous ones, where grand principles rub shoulders with concrete reality, and where the debates of 1789 resonate with those of today. Who represents the people? How to decide together? What does the common interest mean? What can an assembly do? The public is also invited to join in these debates which remain, in part, our own. Designed for young people as well as adults, the show does not just transmit a historical narrative: it reactivates a democratic energy. By giving flesh to the hesitations, the ardour, and the invention of this period, Brioches et révolution! reminds us that democracy is not just an institutional legacy, but a living, collective practice, always to be restarted. With humour, intelligence, and a sense of play, Bérangère Jannelle delivers a proposal that is both scholarly and accessible, where the pleasure of theatre also becomes a pleasure of understanding, debating, and imagining together.
