Overview

New Year's Concert Holly Hyun Choe, conductor Joseph Haydn Symphony No. 45 in F sharp minor, “The Farewell”, Hob. I:45 (1772) Richard Strauss “Praeludium” from the Suite in B flat major, Op. 4 (1884) Mieczysław Karłowicz “Valse” from the Serenade for Strings, Op.

2 (1898) Richard Strauss “Introduction and Fugue” from the Suite in B flat major, Op. 4 (1884) Mieczysław Karłowicz “Final” from the Serenade for Strings, Op.

2 (1898) Jacques Ibert Divertissement (1930) György Ligeti Concert Românesc for small orchestra (1951) A New Year's concert in which the celebration unfolds as a fan of characters. Haydn opens the occasion, not without humour, with the Symphony “The Farewell”.

Behind the famous anecdote lies music of unusual intensity, where light and shade and irony are held in balance. The pages by Richard Strauss draw on a dazzling youthfulness: a sense of shape, an elegance of line and that unique way of making the winds shimmer.

This refinement is answered by the Serenade for Strings by Mieczysław Karłowicz, an unjustly forgotten Polish composer, in which, for the length of a waltz, a frankly romantic sweep unfolds.

Jacques Ibert's Divertissement, a work of wit and bite, will contrast sharply with this more sensitive vein.

Finally, György Ligeti's Concert Românesc will close this first musical evening of the year with stylised popular energy: dances, modal turns of phrase, bold colours, like a firework held at arm's length. 30pm Théâtre Debussy - Cannes Duration: about 1h45 with interval
