En Même Temps

Trained at the Paris Opera and a major figure in contemporary dance, Olivia Grandville has directed Mille plateaux, Centre chorégraphique national de La Rochelle, since 2022. With En même temps, a piece created for nine performers, she humorously and intelligently explores the ambivalence of mass choreographies and well-tuned unisons. Synchronised dances reign supreme on dance floors and our screens. In the age of the meme, unison goes viral. What does this power of adherence generated by group synchronicity tell us? Starting from the observation that “unison in dance is a suspicious, seductive, and dangerously ambiguous form,” the choreographer decides to investigate. The piece resembles those walls where investigators pin photos and clues, and draw correspondences. Here, the challenge is to define unison, to traverse its styles, and to push the experience of “at the same time” to its breaking point, to reveal what it hides as much as what it liberates.
