Overview
Oüm Fouad Boussoufdanse Salle Renaud-Barrault Duration 1hChoreographic tribute to Oum Kalthoum She was known as ‘the Star of the East’. An Egyptian icon, she captivated crowds, and her voice lulled the radio sets of the Maghreb and the Middle East. As for Omar Khayyam, an 11th-century Persian poet and scholar, he wrote of the intoxication of love and the zest for living in fiery verses that she loved to sing. It was through Oum Kalthoum, a singer associated with his Moroccan childhood, that Fouad Boussouf discovered the poetry of Omar Khayyam. With Oüm, the choreographer pays tribute to both of them, and his hybrid dance, drawing on urban, traditional and contemporary influences, unfolds here alongside live music through the bodies of six dancers, whose movement is as loose-limbed as it is seismic, entirely fluid and sensual.
