Overview

Valérie John explores indigo blue as material, memory and gesture. From Martinique to West Africa, her work weaves identities and narratives into assemblages seen as sensitive traces of the past

The monographic exhibition « I telman nwè ki i blé (Si noir que cela en devient bleu)  » presents Valérie John's work since the 1990s and her return to Martinique, where she chose to set up her « atelier-œuvre  » (studio-work).

That act was then a commitment to « faire œuvre  » (making work) while immersed in her milieu and engaging with the translocal memory of the place, in a gesture of shifting identity-building.

At the Palais de Tokyo, through assemblages of paper and textiles, installations, clothing, objects and books, the artist offers a plunge into the metamorphoses of indigo: an aesthetic and sensory experience ranging from the deepest blue tones to the most brilliant black.
