About — The place

The Palais de Tokyo, originally named Palais des Musées d'art moderne, refers to a building dedicated to modern and contemporary art. It is located at 13, avenue du Président-Wilson in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, following the banks of the Seine a few hundred metres north-east of the Palais de Chaillot, in a similar architectural style. The external shell of the building is entirely clad in marble.

It occupies the site of the Savonnerie tapestry factory.

The building in question was named "palais de Tokio" before the war, then "palais de New-York" immediately after the war, and finally "palais de Tokyo", after the "quai de Tokio" (now avenue de New-York) on the banks of the Seine, which its south-east facade overlooks.

Along with the Palais de Chaillot and the Palais d'Iéna, the Palais de Tokyo is one of the three permanent edifices resulting from the 1937 International Exposition and intended, according to the 1934 project, to replace the Musée du Luxembourg. It initially served to present a retrospective of French art since the Middle Ages, but its true inauguration dates from 1947, upon the return of collections relocated during the Second World War.

Its initial purpose was indeed, after the Universal Exhibition, to house two modern art museums: one for the City of Paris, the other a "national museum" for the State. The Musée d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris still occupies the east wing of the building, while the Musée national d’Art moderne, located in the west wing, saw most of its collections transferred to the Centre Pompidou in the 1970s and, for the remaining part, to the Musée d’Orsay in the 1980s. The west wing, thus left free, now houses a contemporary art centre, specifically bearing the name "Palais de Tokyo".

A municipal decree of 14 May 1997 attributed the name Place de Tokyo to a parking area located in front of the palace's entrance, Avenue du Président-Wilson, opposite the Palais Galliera, Musée de la Mode de la ville de Paris, and between Rue Maria-Brignole and Rue de Galliera, which enclose the Palais Galliera.

The exhibition space is one of the largest for contemporary art on the international scene.

This site is served by the Alma - Marceau and Iéna metro stations.

On 22 December 2025, the complex comprising the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris was listed as a historical monument by order of the Prefect of the Île-de-France region.
