“L’Affaire de la rue de Lourcine”, Eugène Labiche’s famous nightmarish vaudeville, is back on stage at Radiant-Bellevue, directed by Jean-Christophe Hembert. In 1857, Eugène Labiche, the French playwright and master of vaudeville, took Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Murders of the Rue Morgue” as inspiration to write “L’Affaire de la rue de Lourcine”. This play thus carries two very different legacies: the detective investigation with the exploration of the human soul from Edgar Allan Poe, and the comedic virtuosity of Eugène Labiche. This hybrid blend gives the work its full value, and Jean-Christophe Hembert embraces both parentages: the “thriller” and the vaudeville. As with his previous shows, the director confronts a great author – today Eugène Labiche – to create a play that illuminates the audience’s path through the complexity of narratives.
