Far from Moscow, on the estate of old Sorin, a retired magistrate, the action unfolds. Living with him permanently is his nephew, the young Konstantin. He is infatuated with a pretty young woman, Nina, and dreams of literary glory. But his mother, the famous actress Arkadina, who refuses to grow old, leaves him to languish in the countryside without money. She lives the good life in town, among the cabs and the telephones, and drags along everywhere with her the illustrious naturalist writer Trigorin. Every summer, the couple comes to recharge their batteries at Sorin's house. But this summer, Konstantin has written a symbolist dramatic poem, and Nina is to perform in it. A makeshift theatre has been built in the park, and the show is about to begin.
